Another important job that Sally Tompkins had in the Civil War was when she got a commission to be a captain. She became the first women ever to hold a commission in the military. Her job was to be a captain of the calvary. The nickname "Captain Sally" started because of this and was kept all throughout her life. Finally, she came home and started to do her charity work again. When she died, they honored her by giving a military funeral.
